I am writing this tutorial because I had about 5 hours of stress while trying to do this for the first time! yes, I’m serious and it really got to me. Hopefully this tutorial will stop other people from facing the same fate as I did.
You want to connect to your Xbox Live on your Xbox 360 but you don’t have a wireless adapter or your modem is not within reach, so your going to need to share you Internet connect on your computer of laptop.
My laptop is running Windows Vista Home Premium and has a wireless connection to my router.. and that’s what I used to connect my Xbox 360 to Xbox Live and below you will find out how I managed to do this and it was not using ICS - Internet Connection Sharing because for some odd reason that would not work with Vista for me! The way that I managed to get everything working was to bridge my LAN with my Wireless… Below are the steps to take.
- Setup your Xbox 360 and your Laptop/PC
- Plug the Ethernet cable into your Xbox 360 and your Laptop/PC
- Make sure your Computer is connected to the Internet
- On your computer follow these steps:
- Click on Start to bring up your Start Menu
- Type in to the search bar network sh
- Now at the top you should see Network and Sharing Center, Click on this
- On the left hand side click on Manage Network Connections
- Highlight both your Wireless connection and your Local Area Connection (LAN)
- Right Click on one of them (Note: both should be highlighted at this point)
- Select Bridge Connections
Now the rest it quite simple its just a case of confirming everything and agreeing to anything windows asks you to do once you have done this make sure you are still connected to the Internet on your Laptop/PC as it did kick me off a few times to start with, don’t worry about this just reset your Internet.
Once you have Internet on your computer go onto your Xbox 360 and test your connection. you should now be able to acquire an IP and DNS if not then repeat this process until you succeed or try something else because this was the last method I tried and the one that happened to work for me tho other methods my work equally as well for you!
I hope this helped and I hope you are Connected to Xbox Live now!
If you are having problems using a bridged connection you may need to use and ICS connection instead, Lucky for you I have a tutorial on this to Connect Xbox Using ICS
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:47 am
I have done all of the steps suggested and when I try to bridge my connections I get the message that says :
“To createa network bridge, you must select at least two LAN or High Speed Internet Connections that are not being used by Internet Connections Sharing.”
I am assuming that I activated ICS by some other means but still am unable for 4 hours now to get past test connection on my 360. I still get IP adress failed.
I know it worked a couple of days ago, but I also did some other networking connections (printer and another laptop) earlier today. Did I mess up the xbox config. Can you offer any suggestions?
December 5th, 2007 at 10:53 am
Hi Mischa, Firstly thank you for using my site now on to your current issue.
Firstly I would go into the properties of the two connections you are trying to bridge and click on the sharing tab then ensure that none of the sharing options are selected, if any of the boxes are checked uncheck them. I have received the same error while i was attempting this myself and that was one cause the other cause was that i was only highlighting one of the connections at a time while you need to have both connections highlighted at the same time this can be achieved by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking, once both connections are highlighted right click either of them then select the bridge option. I do not mean to sound condescending its just they are the two issues where i received the same error as yourself.
I hope this helps, please let me know
December 5th, 2007 at 10:55 am
If none of the solutions I have given above work for you then my next suggestion would be to use ICS here is a post that I wrote recently after having issues with bridging..

when i bridege the connections i get an open sheets error message?
April 3rd, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Dan, If you could give me some more information about the error message you are receiving then I will try and find a solution for you, I have searched “Open Sheet error messages while briding connections” but have found nothing that can help, any other errors you are receiving or error numbers etc would help me serch this issue and find a solution for you would help.
Thanks

hey man, when i try bridging the connections. i lose my internet everytime and i cant get past the MTU test on my xbox live?? any suggestions?
cheers
April 3rd, 2008 at 10:55 pm
sorry, now when i bridge connections, i lose the internet connection
April 4th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Hi Dan, This can sometimes happen as briding connections is not ideal for this type of work but is a great work around for some people, you may want to try using ICS to connect your Xbox to Live.

thats the link, Hope this helps if you are still having issues let me know and I’ll look into it deeper for you.
April 6th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Will i have to do this everytime i connect to xbox live once removing the ethernet cable
April 7th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
spot on thanks for the info
April 7th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
hi. great tut. i have bridged them together. but it still says disconnected on wireless adapter. i am using a ehternet cable frm my 360 to my laptop. i bridged the WNC and the LAN and the internets not comming on the computer either. it says the NBridge is connected, and everything else isnt, but on the window in the tastbar it has a red cross on it :S
any help would be appriciated.
thx
April 8th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Mathew, as long as you dont delete the bridged connection you will not have to repeat this process, just a simple cause of plug the cable in and connect.
April 8th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Harry, It sounds like your wireless connection is not broadcasting or that you have disabled your wireless connection, that would be the first thing I would check. If this does not work for you then i would suggest deleting the bridged connection restarting your computer and follow the steps again.
Failing that, A bridged connection will not work for everyone this is why I have another tutorial for connection the Xbox using ICS, so if everytime you try the brigded connection you can’t connect trying using the ICS version http://www.adamsdvds.co.uk/blog/wordpress/?p=58
Hope this helps

Worked for me. Xbox 360 tells me it’s moderately NATed - is there a way to improve this?
May 2nd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Hi, I just wanna say thank you. i have been searchin the internet for hours just to try to find something like this and you have saved me so much more time. i will try both the methods when i am home and can connect to my xbox.
Thank you for all your time

Hey does anyone know how to configure a buffolo wireless g router, im having real trouble with my xbox getting it online and ive reached boiling point, im going to try what it says in this forum
ill let you know how it goes.
July 26th, 2008 at 12:00 am
John, I’m sorry you are having so many issues with your setup, you have confused me slightly though when saying in your last post that you went and bought a Ethernet cable. You should have all ready been using an Ethernet cable to connect your xbox to your laptop.
I would also like to point out that these two tutorials that I’ve wrote on connecting to Xbox live are not the ideal ways to connect, but they do work.
I used this setup for quite a while until I was able to get my hands on a networking kit, now I have my xbox wired to my router via a 30ft cable
Other points you might want to check if having issues such as “No IP” would be the Xbox settings ensure they are set to “Automatic” Unless of course your connections requires some kind of authentication and I would also consider checking your router DHCP settings.
July 26th, 2008 at 4:10 am
hello yes, i did this and for a day it worked and now if i try to share i can’t get on the internet on my home network, it also won’t allow other laptops on the internet. i think it has to do with the local area connection. that is what has to be on for some reason and i think it is the root of all problems. i don’t know how to delete it and i want to get on xbox live again. I think im an idiot but i really need to know. i use belking but when i turn on the local area connnection it has multiple connection. it shouldn’t. i should only connect to belkin. it’s disabled but i still can’t connect my xbox. i have gone in circle for the past 3 hours trying to figure this out and im at my wits end. please help. i have vista and im not sure how to get rid of this local area connection
July 26th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Hi Jacob, I would like to point out you are not an idiot everyone needs help sometimes.
You can’t delete the Local Area Connection because its connected to the Ethernet cable that you plug into your laptop, you are only able to disable this. I am not clear why you have multiple connections showing (unless your talking about wireless access points) Ideally you should only have in Network Connections your wireless connection (enabled and shared) Local Area Connection Enabled.
To get to Network Connections: Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections.
Or use the method in the post.
On both your wireless connection and your Local Area Connection Click properties and then check
Internet protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
Internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
(by high lighting them and clicking Properties)
Make sure that everything on both tabs is set to Obtain Automatically.
A reboot is always good after changing settins though not always required, Let me know how you get on.
July 26th, 2008 at 10:26 am
Sorry, Don’t forget to delete the Bridge that you created, as the steps I’ve give you above and to sort the problem out using ICS rather then a Briged connection.
http://www.adamsdvds.co.uk/blog/wordpress/?p=58
ICS is the more stable version of the two, the only reason I’ve provided them both is to ensure that everybody has a chance to get online as in some cases one will cause more problems then the other. Trial and Error on your parts to see which works best for you.
July 26th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
okay, i can now get on the internet while the local area connection is enabled but i still cannot get onto xbox live. the xbox is set to automatic but i never even messed with that in the first place. it says that the local area connection is unadentified. i tried to diagnose why that was and it says because it doesn’t have a valid ip address? i have no clue why it doesn’t and in my sharing center it shoes belkin, the internet that my computer is connecting to and the local area connection as multiple connections. it’s possible that that doesn’t mean anything. the local area connection only has access to the local area. so i cannot get to the internet. now my computer is using the connection downstairs. could the computer downstairs be creating problems with this. no settings have been changed on it and i was able to use the xbox for awhile so i don’t see how. if you know of anything please help, i don’t know where else to look.
July 27th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Jacob I’m sorry you are getting so many issues with this I can give you some more advice I only hope this helps you more then then the rest has. I’m going to try and give you an almost step by step process here hoping to solve your issue.
First Navigate to:
Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections.
Now that you are in network connections make sure that there are only two icons in here that being 1. Wireless 2. Local Area Connection, these are the only two connections that should be there
Now go into the properties of the wireless connection and make sure you have unchecked “allow other network users to connect thought this computers Internet connection” Uncheck the box and click OK
Now reboot the computer
when you are up and running again go back to:
Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections.
Enable Local area connection if its not all ready, go to the properties and double click “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” with will open the properties, ensure that “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically” are both checked! then click OK.
Now go to the properties of the wireless connection, on the sharing tab check both boxes and click OK.
go to the properties of the local area connection once again and open up 4 (TCP/IPv4) again and you should now see that’s its changed to
ip 192.168.0.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
default gateway -empty-
and that use the following DNS server addresses is now checked.
This should now allow you to connect to xbox live with via the Ethernet cable from your laptop to your xbox.
If anything above is not what I’ve said then recheck/redo until you get the same results because they are what will get you connected.
I really hope this helps Jacob. Please let me know
July 28th, 2008 at 7:06 am
dude your awesome, i’ve restarted the computer before but never in that order, it’s kind of strange how that works sometimes, but your amazing and i don’t know how to thak u enough. peace be with u and stuff.
July 28th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Your very welcome Jacob, I think I’m just as excited as you about solving this issue. I’m just glad that we solved it in the end and it was though my site.
July 29th, 2008 at 12:12 am
Alright so my connections are bridged, and I cant get passed the IP Address. It keeps failing, and I keep looking for what to do but everything says “Bridge the Connections” Well I have done that and it continues to be stubborn.
July 29th, 2008 at 12:20 am
Chris if you are having ip issues with the Bridged connection I would right suggest that you try using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) I have found this to be the most stable setup type. Trying doing the same as I advised Jacob above in the comments. Let me know how you get on.
July 29th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Thanks. I just realized I didnt have my sharing enabled, so I did that right before I saw your comment. It works now. Thanks for helping though!
July 29th, 2008 at 12:26 am
No problem Chris, I’m pleased that the issue is resolved.
July 29th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
alritee i take it you need to have your pc on while doing thsi and how do you find out your ip address??
July 29th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Yes Dave you will need to have the computer thats connected to your Xbox turned on in order to connect to Xbox Live. To find out your IP in vista
Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections.
Double Click on your Wireless Connection.
In the window that opens Click Details.
Your IP will be displayed in that window next to “IPv4 IP Address”.
Hope this helps
July 29th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
and have you got one for windows xp??
July 29th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
The process is mostly the same, as we are talking about bridging a connection:
Start > Network Connections.
Or
Start > Connect to > Show all Connections.
Then highlight your Wireless Connection and your Local Area Connection.
Right click either of them and select Bridge Connections.
thats pretty much it.
To find out the IP on Windows XP just double click your wireless connection and then click on the support tab your “IP Address” will be there.
August 4th, 2008 at 5:59 am
thx for the steps!
August 8th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
you, sir deserve a bloody medal. you have saved me about £50 with this tutorial because i was going to buy a wireless adapter then i read your tutorial, used the ethernet cable that came with the xbox and it worked. so thanks, i really appriciate it.
August 15th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
hi, i am using a mobile broadband connection on my laptop. is there a way i can connect my xbox through this. the above options only work if you laptop is connected through wireless connection to the internet.
thanks in advance for your help.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Hi Mark, I’ve not had any experience with Mobile Broadband in the past so the honest answer to your question is I don’t know If the connection speed is very slow it would also not be a good idea, how ever if your Mobile connection shows up in Network Connections check the properties and see if you are able to select share if you are able to do that then it should work. I’m not sure if you have a FUP on your Mobile Connection if you do I would suggest that you did not use this for xbox live because of the amout of bandwidth its going to use.
If Bandwidth is not an issue and you can share the connection by following the same steps above just changing “wireless” for your Mobile Connection then everything should work.
Just make sure you check your Bandwidth Usage and Speed.. Last thing you want is a huge bill for going way over or really laggy play online.
August 16th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
every time i bridge the conections with the ethernet cable attached to the 360, with the 360 set up i get the same problem. i lose my internet and local conection (the network and sharing center screen just shows my computer, the globe internet symbol, and a big red cross between the two. When i click on the cross to diagnose the problem i get the options \’automatically get new ip settings for the network adapter \’network bridge\’ \’ and \’ reset the network adapter \’network bridge\’. neither of these options seem to help much.
The most annoying thing is, is that i have actually set this up and got it to work twice before (although it took ages both times) but i cant remember exactly how i did it. but i know this way will work for me.
I\’ve tried going down the ics route, only for it to say “An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled”. i\’ve tried your solution for this (making sure all the services are started and automatic) but this doesn\’t seem to help. any ideas (ics or bridge) would be appriciated.
(btw…i seem to get different results when i bridge without the cable connected. all seems ok on my laptop, but the xbox fails on the ip address.)
August 18th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Matt, I hooked my xbox 360 back up to my computer and did a bridged connection to try and resolve this issue, this is what I did and this should work for you
First make sure you have deleted any bridges and turned off all ICS settings and restarted your computer so we are working on a fresh reboot.
Make sure you restart before doing this.
Both your laptop and Xbox are turned on,
Now Connect Ethernet from Xbox to Laptop
Go to “Manage network connections”
Ok at this point the laptop and xbox are connected and you will still have internet because you have not done nothing yet.
Highlight both connections and Bridge
(now here i lost internet)
Just leave it a moment and it should come back its just resetting the network
if it does not come back restart you computer here.
Go to Manage network connections again
Under the Network Bridge Properties (right click the Network bridge, select properties) Internet protocol Version 4 and 6 everything is on automatic,
Reboot your Laptop (Important)
Once your computer has started up again go back to Network and sharing center and check that the bridge is on a Private network not a Public one. If its public then you need to click on Customize just to the right and change it to a Private Network.
At this point I had no internet so I had to restart my router, once I had done this I regained internet on my computer and was also able to connect to xbox live without any issues what so ever.
These are the stats that my xbox gave when it was testing the connection.
Network adapter Wired
IP address Confirmed
DNS confirmed
MTU confirmed
ICMP confirmed
Xboxlive connected
NAT open (this may be different for you)
Now go back on the xbox and connect and there you have it.
Hopefully this will solve your issues, I can’t stress enough though about the Automatic IP please make sure everything inculding your xbox are set to automatic.
August 18th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
hmmm, this didn’t work. at the end of it all though, my network and sharing center only showed my wireless connection (access: local and internet, connection: network bridge, and private), and not my local area connection. and i’m pretty sure it should display both. this really seemed like it was gonna work after i waited and my connection re apeared (as i’d not done this before), but so far, no positive result.
August 19th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Hi Matt, You shouldnt be able to see LAN in “Network and Sharing center” here is an image of what your network and sharing center should look like (Some of the names will be different for you of course).
Could you still access the internet on the computer.. with you saying that it said Local and internet you should have been able to view the internet on the laptop and connect with the xbox. what was the result of the xbox connection?
There is a few more things that I would like you to try if you still can not connect:
Check that all these services are Running.
Workstation
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Computer Browser.
Also Turn any firewalls you have off while you try again as they can stop you from gaining access. Let me know how it goes.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
yeah, thats exactly what mine looked like. the result on my xbox was it was failing at the ip stage. i’ll try it again tonight using the tips you’ve given me. failing that i might just give in and buy one of those homeplug thingys.
August 19th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
If what I posted above does not solve your issue I’m all out of ideas
There just seam to be a few people with both ICS and Bridged that just seam to get these unsolvable problems, I’d love to find out the solution.
They way I’ve got my xbox hooked up now is using a Network Kit from BnQ, now I’m free to move my laptop about again and it was still less then the wireless xbox adapter. Which is basicly just a very long ethernet cable (pluged right into the router runs round the house to the xbox) just depends where you’ve got your xbox/router and if its easy to get a cable from A to B and if you can do it discreetly so that it doesnt look a mess.
If your not a very technical person though and you cant resolve the Bridging issue i would just say go for the OEM Wireless Adapter
August 19th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Oh well, thats it. i have officially failed. thanks for your help and everything, but its not to be. quite how i managed it to do it the last time, i dunno.
August 19th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Maybe something has changed on your system since the last time you did this, really not sure. I’m sorry I couldnt help you resolve this
August 19th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
WOOOAAA!. hold the phone. its only gone and worked. i just remembered that last time i had it connected up straight to the router i wrote down all the ip, subnet etc numbers and had them saved t the manual settings on the xbox. ( ^_^) Also i bridged the connctions when my xbox was not connected, waited for the network to reset itself, plugged the ‘box back in. just to try it out, and that combination worked. Woop woop. just wish i hadn’t just ordered that homeplug kit now.
THANKS!
(although actually it was my way that worked….but still…you gave me the idea…thanks!)
August 19th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
I’m just glad that you finally got it all working, shame about just ordering the kit though. Seams to be the way things play out in this world, when you don’t need something anymore you tend to find it.
August 30th, 2008 at 3:59 am
I get the message that says :
“To createa network bridge, you must select at least two LAN or High Speed Internet Connections that are not being used by Internet Connections Sharing.”
and i did all the stuff in advanced settings,
What now?
August 30th, 2008 at 10:13 am
You are receiving this error for one of two reasons.
1. You have ICS enabled on one of the connections ( you need to turn that off on all connections before you can bridge).
2. You are not highlighting both connections that you want to bridge. (ensure that you highlight both of the connections and the same time before you try and bridge)
September 1st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
This seems to be the website to ask help for so here i go….
I’ve done a bridge on my laptop and everything and it keeps saying “fail” on the IP Address, read the past comments..and theres one thing i don’t understand…Do i need to click/unclick the boxes in “sharing” under the properties of LAN and Wireless Network Connections???
September 1st, 2008 at 11:09 pm
ok ok…ive done it again and i get an error message…now i think this is why it doesn’t work. Although it might mean nothing. When i try and click under “Sharing” “Allow other network….computer’s Internet connection” it comes up with this message “An error occured while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled”. So i assume if i need both of these clicked and i can’t, im screwed??
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:10 am
Hi Tom, I’ve replied to your comment on the ICS post to, to make it more clear you only have to enable sharing on your wireless connection nothing on the LAN just make sure thats automatic. As I said in the other reply I’ve not had much success correcting “An error occured while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled” however I have just updated that post with something else I’ve found so you might want to take a look, if you try the bridged connection make sure that your connections are as they where before trying to enable ICS.
September 9th, 2008 at 2:15 am
i love you thanks!! this has been annoying me for the best part of 2 days and your nice site and the question on the first comment sorted all my problems out… marry me

THANK YOU
October 1st, 2008 at 4:46 am
me agian i posted a commebnt on ure ics pageside but my NAT werent open and the link to fix it is complicated… for me anyways would much rather get help with the bridged one… ok so im connected to the internetting and i am currently bridged but i fail the IP test it used to work… and now it dont i would much rather get help with this the bridge ne rather then the ics because i know my nat will be open with this one i dont really know if i asked a question in that but i hope you can find one or two in there… HELP 8(
October 1st, 2008 at 2:30 pm
ok so me and my buddy have been try ing to get this **** to work for about a month we started with the ICS and it worked half ass we couldnt get the nat settings to go to open they stayed at moterate and somtimes it didnt work at all then we desovered how to bridge our connections and yhat wored great for about two days and then it took a big steamy **** o itself and now it wont confirm its ip adress the xbox says that another program is using the same ip adress idont have any other programs running on the internet that would be using it so im thinking it must be the computer using it to connect to the router or the bridge using it to connect to one of the connectios. i cant reset the router cause i dont have one i live close to my nieghbers to steal there signal and i get pretty good connection uassally like 3 out of five bars any suggestions would be great.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Hey sorry im not around much theses past few weeks im really busy with my house and am currently dealing with the flu or a bad cold either way im not a great sight at the moment.
all of the questions most of youa re asking though can be found on my blog using the search bar at the top ive added detailed instructions concerning ICS and Bridged connections (at the moment im finding it hard to even consontrate)
as for you nathan you shouldnt be stealing internet from other people and if you are getting an ip conflict and none of your computers are using the same IP then its most likly that the person you are stealing internet from has that IP on one of there computers/devices and there is not much that i can do to help you with that.
mailbox: I dont really have the brain power or time to look deeper into this at the moment, but once im feeling better ill try and work out an easy to understand solution and post a tutorial untill then your on your own my friend, sorry

Mailbox, I’m still not 100% at the moment but I have been looking around for a tutoiral that is easier to understand and I think I’ve found just that.
Take a look at this NAT Tutorial.

Uhmm yeah, i just got my first Xbox 360, and sad to say that my router is far away from the gaming area, so i decided to connect it to my PC with an ethernet cord, once i did that and then bridged the connections and followed the steps, i went back to my Xbox, tested the connection and it came up my IP Address failed. what did i do wrong? lol

Hi, I did your steps over the summer and LiVE worked fine! Hurrah! But its been a while and my xbox has travelled around, and now i’ve plugged it back in again, the bridge still works but i’m having IP issues, the xbox fails the LiVE test on the IP address everytime. Whats going on? I’ve tried deleting the bridge and re-doing it, although when i do this it doesnt ask me to confirm all the pop ups like it did when i did it initially. Help!
