How To Backup Your Registry In Vista

In this tutorial I am going to show you how to backup your Registry for peace of mind. This is very useful if you with to play about with the registry and possibly change a few settings around to see if you can improve your computers performance, if you make a mistake or cause an adverse affect on your computer then you can restore to your previously backed up state.



Step One

Click on the Start Button

Step Two

Type Regedit into the search bar and press Enter.

Step Three

At this point your screen will glaze over and Windows will ask you for permission to run this command, Click Continue and Registry Editor will open. (Windows will not let me take a screenshot of this screen!! sorry about that.)

Step Four

Within the Registry Editor Windows Click File and then Click Export as seen in the image below.

Step Five

Name your Backup something like Registry_Backup_Date replacing Date with the actual date.
Change Export Range to All
Click Save.

Step Six

Give your computer a moment to complete the task and then you should have something that looks like the image below where you saved the backup.

Step Seven

Close Registry Editor.

Backup Completed

You have now successfully backed up your Windows Vista Registry, If you have any issues in the future with your registry while editing keys then revert to this backup by double clicking the icon and follow the instructions. All being well you will never have to use this Registry Backup.
